Ettrick Rocks, where you will be staying - The story behind the name

Ettrick Rocks, as known by locals, is adjacent to the river Ettrick, the river named after an 8 ton Cutter that was wrecked there around 1847 and owned by the Bass Strait ‘policeman’ David Howie. The name of the location befitted the name of our coastal and luxurious accommodation retreats.

Why Ettrick Rocks?

The location offers stunning and breathtaking views fronting the Southern Ocean. Guests will enjoy the rugged topography directly in front of their retreats and within a stone’s throw will find a number of small and secluded sandy sheltered coves and rock pools. There is an abundance of sea shells to collect, a favourite with children and parents alike.

The rugged scenery and the crashing and splashing waves against the rocks offer plenty of photo opportunities to take home and share with friends. A little walk further down is a secluded white beach, perfect for swimming, fishing, snorkeling or diving for crayfish & abalone (depending on permitted seasons).*

*Seasonal and requires appropriate fishing license, to find out more visit:

The wallabies gather and freely roam around the retreats, having our guests jump from one end of the room to the other to get a closer glimpse of these wonderful creatures. The activity of the birdlife depending on the incoming tide is seen hovering above the rocks and swooping down at their catch. The lighthouse pulsing light can be clearly seen from the retreats as the sun goes down to end the day with some of the most spectacular sunsets you will ever experience. Put your feet up, glass in hand, your friends and loved ones nearby and thank nature in sharing these gifts with you!
